Huddleston occupies the quieter north shore of Smith Mountain Lake in southeastern Bedford County.
The community is best known as the home of Smith Mountain Lake State Park, a 1,148-acre park with a public beach, hiking trails, camping and cabins. It is consistently one of the most visited attractions around the lake.
Huddleston is also home to the Mariners Landing golf and lake community, several marinas and Parkway Marina, which hosts the lake’s largest Fourth of July fireworks display.
For homeowners, Huddleston offers a more rural setting than the Bridgewater Plaza area, with wooded lots, broad water views and a strong sense of community on the Bedford County side of the lake.
As the lake stretches toward Smith Mountain Dam, it opens into some of its broadest water. Huddleston lots often reflect that.
Long views reward thoughtful window placement, taller ceilings in the main living spaces and decks or porches positioned for sunsets over the water.
Open water can mean stronger wind and more wave action. Covered outdoor rooms, durable siding and roofing, and a well-planned dock help a home stand up to the setting.
Many north-shore lots fall toward the water. A sloped-lot design with a walkout lower level can add living space and connect the home to the shoreline.
Some of the north shore’s most desirable lots sit inside planned golf and lake communities.
Many communities require plan approval before construction. We prepare for that review as part of the design schedule.
Minimum square footage, rooflines, exterior colors and materials may be specified in the covenants.
Community docks, pools or golf access can change how much private outdoor space and storage your own home needs.
Work hours, site cleanliness and road use are often regulated. Respecting them keeps good relationships with future neighbors.
The north shore’s slower pace appeals to many retirees. Main-level living and accessible entries keep the home comfortable for years.
With the State Park beach and trails nearby, grandchildren always have something to do. Bunk rooms and guest suites help everyone fit.
Homes near Mariners Landing can be planned around golf-cart storage, outdoor entertaining and easy lock-and-leave ownership.
A weekend home can be compact, low-maintenance and focused on the porch, the dock and the view.
Like everywhere on Smith Mountain Lake, the shoreline below the 800-foot contour is managed by Appalachian Power. Docks, stabilization such as riprap, paths to the water and vegetation removal in that zone require its approval under the Shoreline Management Plan, in addition to a Bedford County building permit.
Shoreline classification and frontage can limit what is possible on a given lot, so we recommend confirming dock potential before you purchase. Our waterfront construction and shoreline planning page explains the process in more detail.
Huddleston is an unincorporated community in southeastern Bedford County, along Route 626 (Smith Mountain Lake Parkway) on the north shore of the lake. Smith Mountain Lake State Park and the Mariners Landing community are both in the Huddleston area.
Huddleston is on the Bedford County side of the lake, and Smith Mountain Lake State Park is roughly 40 miles from both Lynchburg and Roanoke. Many homeowners like that balance when they split time between the lake and either city.
Toward the dam, Smith Mountain Lake opens into broader water with long views. Those views are a major draw, but exposed lots can also see more wind and wave action, which affects dock design, covered outdoor space and exterior materials.
Huddleston is in Bedford County, so building permits typically go through Bedford County. Docks and shoreline improvements also require a separate permit from Appalachian Power under the Smith Mountain Lake Shoreline Management Plan.
